Wellsford store cattle 22.01

Buyers were present in good numbers at Wellsford on Monday, but there was a lack of cattle available as Northland farmers sit comfortable on their grass covers.

The sale consisted of 25 main lines though only two had more than 10 head. Quality was mixed throughout, though overall the extra buyers on fewer cattle meant that the market was very solid.

One of the double figure lines was 16 Angus-Friesian heifers, which was the biggest pen of the day, and at 458kg made good returns of $2.73/kg.

The pick in the 1-year steer pens was Hereford-Friesian, 330-369kg, though these were off the pace of the previous at $3.09-$3.12/kg. Heifers of similar weight however lifted to $3.03-$3.04/kg.

Weaner's made up half the sale and most Angus-Friesian steers, 100-123kg, sold for $475-$565. Good quality Devon-cross heifers, 132kg, fetched $520, while the bulls, 143kg, returned $545.
