A near capacity yarding at Pukekohe on Saturday met a determined bench of buyers and prices stayed strong right through the auction, Livestock Mart Auctions agent Pat Farrell reported.

Per head prices of $2000 plus was achieved in the prime heifer and bull pens, with a 668kg heifer making $2.99/kg, and 839kg bull, $3.05/kg. Other prime heifers sold to $2.88, and bulls, $2.65/kg. Steer prices were also strong, and 519-599kg sold to $2.89-$3.02/kg. The best of the cows made $2.35/kg, with 456kg earning $1.94/kg. Light cows traded at $1.47/kg.

Demand did not waver into the store pens either, and 2-year steers, 445-484kg, made $2.92-$2.99/kg, while 425-450kg heifers were not fair behind at $2.89-$2.94/kg. Other good store heifers, 338-407kg, earned $2.85-$2.92/kg. One-year Hereford-Friesian steers, 344-351kg, were a talking point as they went under the hammer for $3.32-$3.51/kg, putting up to $1200 on the top line, while other lines traded up to $3.05/kg. Medium 15-month heifers were variable with 282kg making $3.33/kg, but lesser quality 301kg only managed $2.82/kg.

Weaner prices were nothing short of outstanding as light lines sold above market value. Hereford-Friesian steers, 99kg, made $690, and heifers, 83-90kg, $380-$600.
