The $200 million complex will eventually house 700 staff from the university, AgResearch and DairyNZ working on projects Tertiary Education Minister Paul Goldsmith said would benefit the whole primary sector.
“Today is a major milestone for agricultural science in New Zealand and its benefits will extend to the whole of the primary sector,” he said.
Eventually the 27,000 square metre facility would be part of the Lincoln Science hub which would include Landcare Research and Plant and Food Research.
The Government is contributing $85 million to Lincoln University for the project, with the rest coming from AgResearch and Lincoln.
