That halted four consecutive decreases in the index and was likely linked to tighter global milk supplies with demand at the auction for milk powder, milk fats and cheese.

Milk powder prices strengthened in response to stronger demand from southeast Asian countries and the Middle East with whole milk powder prices lifting 3.6% to an average price of US$3074/t, NZX dairy analyst Robert Gibson said.

It was the first lift in average prices for WMP since March.

Skim milk powder prices lifted 3.8% with average prices reaching US$2505/t, the second consecutive lift in SMP prices.

The anhydrous milk fat price index was up 1.7% to an average price of US$5523/t. Butter prices also rose 1.7% with an average price of US$4406/t, likely in response to reduced volumes sold compared with the previous event.

This follows five consecutive decreases in the average price of butter at GDT, with strong price increases occurring for near-term deliveries.
