Competition is sharp among fertiliser firms

Competition is keen among fertiliser companies and their large range of phosphate products, Ballance chief executive Mark Wynne says.

He was commenting at National Fieldays on the recent launch of reactive phosphate rock (RPR) from Algeria on the New Zealand market by industry pioneer Bert Quin.

Quin said the big fertiliser co-operatives are not promoting RPR and he believes there are onfarm environmental benefits available, which farm owners are unaware of.

Wynne responded that RPR has always been on Ballance’s product list and farmers have been able to source it but it is not a big seller.

Summit-Quinphos has promoted RPR strongly when it was up to 15% of phosphate sales but that is no longer the case and research trials have not been run for many years, Wynne said.

“It is getting increasingly hard to source the RPR with the right cadmium and citric solubility,” he said.

The Ballance price list was refreshed recently to include the latest supply contracts, foreign exchange rates and competitive positioning.

Ballance finished its financial year on May 31 and will report its results in late July before the annual meeting in September.

They will reflect a good sales year with strong demand from the agriculture and horticulture sectors, slightly moderated by bad weather.

At Fieldays Ballance promoted its newest Mitagator service for reducing nitrate, phosphorous, sediment and E coli loss from individual farms.
