US milk production growth slowing

Milk production growth in the US has slowed to its lowest rate in a year.

Milk production in the US expanded by just 1.2% during March 2015, significantly lower than the 1.7% average growth experienced across Q1 2015. 

During the first quarter of 2015 cows in milk expanded by 17,000 head from the previous quarter and were up 88,000 head on the first quarter of 2014.

Cow productivity reached record levels in March 2015 where production averaged 1959 pounds averaged across the 23 major milk producing States. 

During March production again slowed in California where milk output was 2.9% down on March last year. But growth remained strong in Wisconsin, the second largest milk producing state. In Wisconsin output was up 3.6% and solid growth was also recorded in Idaho (+1.3%) and New York state (1.1%).
