Round-up: Average EU SMP prices hit 6 year low

European internal prices for dairy products declined across the board last week with butter making the biggest decline and average EU skim milk powder (SMP) prices dropping below the intervention price to a 6 year low, figures from a Milk Market Observatory report show.

For the week ending January 10 SMP prices dropped 2.8% to €167/100kg (US$1870/t). This is now below the intervention price of €169.80/100kg and a 6 year low on average EU prices recorded by MMO. 

Butter prices dropped to €285/100kg (US$3100/t), down 4.3% from the previous week’s price of €298 (US$3242/t) and the lowest price since September last year. 

Whole milk powder dropped 1.4% to €223/100kg (US$2426/t). 

Of the cheeses, cheddar dropped by 0.4% to €286/100kg (US$3111/t) the lowest price since 2010, edam dropped 2.8% to €246/100kg (US$2676/t), gouda was down 2.6% to €246/100kg (US$2676/t) and Emmental was down 0.9% to €380/100kg (US$4134/t).
