Rural contributions deserve recognition Contributions in sports and the arts may have claimed much of the attention following the release of the latest Queen’s Birthday Honours, but it was nice to see services to the rural sector also recognised.

More often than not, those who are part of the sector don’t seek the limelight, preferring instead to just get on with it.

It’s almost as if being singled out is seen as embarrassing and it’s better to keep your head down.

That’s all well and good, but it’s also important to give credit where it’s due and to recognise and celebrate those who deserve it.

At a time when it’s not exactly fashionable to be a farmer, it doesn’t hurt to remind the wider community of the work that’s done to produce food and export dollars that benefit the whole country.

So, congratulations to those who were awarded honours.

As for everyone else, do you know anyone who deserves a bit of recognition for their efforts?

Maybe it’s time we made a bit more out of acknowledging outstanding contributions.
