EU WMP prices make gains

Whole milk powder (WMP) prices led the gains in dairy commodity prices in Europe for the week ending September 20.

WMP prices gained 3.5% on the previous week reaching €1750/t but is still 20% below the same time last year.

Butter and skimmed milk powder (SMP) also continued their recent accent with quotations of €2880/t (+1.3%) and €1750/t (+1.5%).  The EU average butter prices continue to stay well ahead of the intervention price of €2217/t.

The average EU SMP price is ahead of the €1698/t intervention price but the European Commission data shows prices in Poland are hovering around intervention at €1700/t, in Ireland they are below at around €1660/t and Latvia are quoting prices for SMP at €1610/t.

Average EU prices for whey powder are well below prices this time last year. The price of €650/t is 30% below year-ago levels although there was a slight increase of €10/t from the previous week.

Cheddar and gouda made small losses for the week with prices of €2960/t (-0.2%) and €2510/t (-0.9%). Edam and emmental made small gains for the week with prices of €2430/t (+0.8%) and €3990/t (+0.1%)
