Cold start expected for winter

Farmers can expect a chilly start to winter with sharp, cold snaps expected this month as cold fronts move onto the country from the Tasman Sea and Southern Ocean, Niwa’s latest Seasonal Climate Outlook says.

The north and east of both islands can expect near-average or above-average temperatures with near-average temperatures most likely in the west of both islands.

Cold snaps and frosts can also be expected in typically colder locations from May to July.

It predicts an equal likelihood of  rain to be near normal or below normal in the north and east of both islands in the next three months.

The west of both islands can expect near-normal rain.

Soil moisture and river flows are likely to be below normal in the drought-hit north of the North Island and most likely to be near normal in the west of the South Island.

In the eastern North Island and northeast South Island soil moisture levels and river flows are about equally likely to be normal or below normal and near normal in the western North Island.

There could be more westerly winds than normal due because of rain and thunderstorms from the tropics.
