Low demand from China can be observed in the recently released October trade data, which is a lagged indicator of the widely reported dip in buying from China. China's WMP imports in October increased from the month before, reaching over 15,000 tonnes compared to 9,500t in September. But compared to last year, volumes in October are 72% lower. Last year WMP imports in October totaled over 54,000t.

But looking at WMP import volumes for the year to date, it is already higher than the full 2013 year with two months to go.

In 2013, WMP imports totaled 619,000t. In the first ten months this year, WMP imports have reached 621,000t.

China continues to source the majority of its WMP from NZ. The share of imports originating from NZ for the current year-to-date is identical to 2013, at 91%. Other countries such as Australia, Uruguay and Argentina have shipped more WMP to China this year, but their volumes remain relatively small. The year-to-date volumes from each of these individual countries range from 10,000 – 15,000t. The small volumes of WMP being supplied from Europe countries decreased further this year.

SMP imports in October declined from the previous month, at 15,900t compared to 16,100t in September. Compared to a year ago volumes are down by 28% to the 22,000 imported in October 2013.

Cheese imports have stayed above year-ago levels all this year, with volumes in October of 4,600t which is 19% higher than last year.
