After weak early-season sales the market was boosted by the lower New Zealand dollar and a runaway fine wool market in Australia that continues to break new ground, PGG Wrightson South Island sales manager and auctioneer Dave Burridge said.

There was an very good standard of wool on sale with most pre-lamb shorn wools showing excellent colour, style and staple strength.

Crossbred fleece 31 to 35 microns was 3% to 5% dearer on a limited offering and 35.1 micron and stronger wools were 3% to 4% higher.

Crossbred second-shear was 3% to 4% dearer and oddments 5% to7% up.

Mid-micron wools sold, with 23 to 27 microns 2% to 7% higher and Merino wools raced ahead, being 5% to 9% dearer.

The pass-in rate was 11%.

The exchange rate for the kiwi dollar on the day was US$0.657, compared to 0.679 at the previous sale on August 2.
