Volumes on offer were below rostered levels and the levels of a week earlier and this, combined with the lower New Zealand dollar, meant buyers had to bid up to fill orders, PGG Wrightson South Island sales manager Dave Burridge said.

The good growing season in most regions also meant most wool was coming forward in good order.

A small offering of mid-micron fleece retained the upward price trend, but the percentage gains were matched by most strong wools, with 39 micron as strong as any at 2.5% higher. Some 33-micron crossbred second shear wool gained 7%, and lambs’ wool was also steadily higher.

All prices presented in micron level, per kg/clean.

Full wool (good to average colour): 28 micron, $8.75, up 10c; 29, $8.03, up 21c; 32, $4.28, up 3c; 33, $4.11, up 6c; 34, $3.94, up 4c; 35, $3.33, up 5c; 36, $3.28, up 2c; 37, $3.27, up 1c; 38, $3.25, up 5c; 39, $3.23, up 8c.

The Wrightson wool average indicator price (average to good full length crossbred fleece) was at about $3.50kg clean, down from $4.00 at the same time last year, before the second leg of an extended fall which bottomed at close to $3.00 in June.
