Just when the strong wool market had started to see some encouragement, prices fell again at the South Island auction in Christchurch on Thursday.

Some mid-micron fleece did firm but strong wools had some sharp falls after a couple of good recent sales. Hogget wools were worst affected.

Merino prices also fell but remained at high levels – fine wools were near the end of their season and there was some keen bidding from buyers wanting to complete orders, PGG Wrightson South Island sales manager Dave Burridge said.

Compared to the November 16 sale in Christchurch, 31 to 34-micron crossbred fleece was 7% to 10% cheaper and 35 micron and stronger wool was 3% to 5% cheaper.

The pass-in rate was 15%.
