Wool prices firm at Napier and Christchurch

Avatar photo
Full fleece and crossbred second-shear woolds were firmer across all micron ranges at Thursday’s Christchurch sale and mostly firmer at Napier. Lambs’ wool was cheaper in price, continuing a recent trend, though bidding at the sales remained solid.

In Christchurch full wool demand was especially good for 28 to 34 micron, popular with Chinese buyers, PGG Wrightson South Island sales manager Dave Burridge said.

Prices at the finer end were up about 5% and at the stronger end by up to 8% on a week earlier.

For crossbred second-shear, some gains were greater still, more than 10% for 37 and 39-micron, two-to-three inches in length.

At Napier, good-to-average full fleece was up to 6% dearer than at the February 1 sale, North island auctioneer Steve Fussell said.

Second-shear wool was firmer, by 3% to 7%, except for some two-to-three-inch fleece, which slipped by up to 2%.

Lambs’ wool at Napier was from 2% to 7% cheaper in the 28 to 31-micron range, with 29-30-micron falling significantly in Christchurch.

The pass-in rate in Napier was just 2% but higher at Christchurch at 7%.

Principal buyers were from the United Kingdom, Middle East, India, China, Australia, and the New Zealand carpet mills.

A slightly easier NZ dollar helped the market, being about US2c lower than a week earlier.
