High wool volumes help buyers

A big offering of 9200 bales of end-of-season crossbred fleece brought some price resistance to the Christchurch wool auction last Thursday.

Prices were generally cheaper than at the previous sale a week earlier though the best-prepared lambs’ wool continued to find favour with buyers. Nearly all the lambs’ wool lots were sold, PGG Wrightson South Island sales manager Dave Burridge said.

A highlight was a 10% gain for 29 micron lambs’ wool and gains of 5% to 6% for 30 and 31 micron.

Some adult crossbred wools firmed, especially at the fine end, with gains for 32 and 33 micron. At the strong end, 36-39 micron, prices eased slightly. It was the same for crossbred second-shear, firmer at the finer end and easier at the strong end.

The pass-in rate was 15%.
