Conditions were hot and muggy at the Tuakau store cattle sale on Thursday, but it was the buyers doing most of the sweating, Craig Chamberlain of Carrfields Livestock reported.

A rare combination of strong late-summer grass growth and a shortage of cattle provided perfect conditions for farmers with quality stock to sell, and the market lifted on the previous week.

The yarding of 480-head included a small offering of older steers, 450kg-plus, which traded at $2.93-$3.06/kg. Steers in the 380-450kg range made $2.95-$3.23/kg, with the next cut, 300-380kg, earning $3.02-$3.59/kg. The latter category was dominated by steers in the 320-330kg range and the top rate was paid for a nice pen of Angus. Good Hereford-Friesian weaner steers, 180kg-plus, sold at $770-$850, and lighter and lesser-bred weaners, 120-160kg, fetched $620-$700.

The heavier heifers, 350-420kg, traded at $2.85-$3.05/kg, with 280-350kg lots making $3.05-$3.30/kg. Hereford-Friesian weaner heifers, 130-150kg, earned $630-$660 and red-bodied Hereford-Friesians, 120kg, $550. Lighter and lesser-bred weaner heifers sold down to $400.

About 380 cattle were presented at last Wednesday’s prime sale and the market remained firm. Heavy prime steers, 650kg-plus, sold at $2.88-$2.91/kg and mediums, 550-650kg, $2.82-$2.88/kg. The heifer section included very good exotic lines at 590kg, which earned $2.89-$2.93/kg. Trade-type heifers made $2.70-$2.83/kg and beef cows $2.15-$2.40/kg. Heavy Friesian cows traded at $2.00-$2.10/kg, with medium boners fetching $1.85-$1.95/kg, and lighter cows $1.65-$1.85/kg.

Around 2300 ewes and lambs were presented at last Monday’s sheep sale. Lambs sold at similar rates to the previous week and the ewe market firmed slightly. Heavy prime lambs sold to $130-$156, medium $115-$130, and lighter $105-$115. About 1000 store lambs were offered, with good stores making $95-$105, medium $80-$93 and lighter lambs $70-$80. Heavy ewes traded at $125-$138, with medium ewes making $105-$120 and lighter types $70-$90.
