Temuka sale 19.3

The high lamb prices achieved the previous week drew in a much larger number of store lambs to Temuka on Monday, and while prices held up well considering the growth the market did ease.

Cattle numbers dropped, going against the seasonal trend.

Nearly 8000 store lambs were penned, offering up a wide range for buyers. Prices eased as the top mixed sex made $107-$117, medium $97-$105, and lighter types, $76-$96. Ewe lambs sold well with the lighter end exceeding $4.00/kg and all trading at $98-$110.

The prime pens ticked off another week at similar levels. Heavy prime lambs firmed to $150-$167, and all bar six head traded at $110-$167.

The shine came off the prime ewes as just one line sold over $200 and a smaller portion reached $140-$188, though this was also relative to condition as well as a slight easing. Most were medium types that made $90-$139.

Cattle numbers fell but prime buyers were pleased to see a bigger yarding of steers, and after a fairly steady run prices firmed. Angus, 625-696kg, sold to $2.89-$2.94/kg, as did most other beef lines, while a slightly lighter line of Angus hit $3.00/kg. The bull pens offered up a good spread of beef and dairy and returns were solid. Very heavy beef and exotic lines, 900kg and over, sold consistently at $2.60-$2.71/kg, with better yielding, lighter lines making $2.80-$2.90/kg. Jersey, 444-508kg, made good returns at $2.51-$2.60/kg.

Beef heifer numbers were low with most making $2.70-$2.87/kg, though two Devon, 590kg, pushed to $2.88/kg.

Beef cow prices also showed improvement and a big offering of Angus was again penned as scanned empties come out. The top lines made $2.22-$2.25/kg, medium $2.11-$2.20/kg, and third cuts, $2.04-$2.13/kg.

After a steady result at the previous sale, an increase in demand and fewer numbers meant boner cow prices firmed. Better lines sold for $1.92-$2.04/kg range, with second cuts making $1.82-$1.92/kg, and third, $1.66-$1.80/kg. Again buyers were very astute in their bidding and few sold outside these ranges, apart from the lesser Jersey lines.
