Rongotea sale 16.05

Winter mode was notable at Rongotea on Wednesday, with prices reflecting limited demand.

In calf Friesian heifers made $1050 and crossbred, $870-$1000. Friesian boner cows, 515–567kg, sold for $1.67-$1.79/kg on a steady market, while crossbred and Jersey returned $1.51-$1.65/kg.   

Good Hereford-Friesian and Angus-cross R2 steers managed $2.61-$2.62/kg, though most other lines of beef-cross and dairy traded at $2.22-$2.41/kg. All bulls ranged from $2.45-$2.49/kg, from heavy Hereford-Friesian through to lighter Friesian. Most of the older cattle were heifers and again prices were variable. Speckle Park, 445-460kg, were a talking point, matching steer price at $2.61/kg, while the top Hereford-Friesian made $2.53/kg. Most other beef lines sold for $2.18-$2.40/kg, while Friesian, 325-428kg, returned $2.17-$2.33/kg.

Very few weaners sold in excess of $600 unless they had the weight and quality that buyers were looking for. Exceptions to the rule was Angus steers, 232kg, $755 and Angus-cross heifers, 240kg, $710. Lighter beef and beef-Friesian steers, 135-180kg, sold for $480-$585, while crossbred, 112-115kg, returned $450-$460. Hereford-Friesian heifers, 120-155kg, made $490-$600, with the lighter end pushing over $4.00/kg. Friesian heifers, 135-153kg, were well off the pace though at $270-$310. In the bull pens Friesian, 151-170kg, fetched $480-$495, and Hereford-Friesian, 130-210kg, $460-$560.

Friesian bull calves sold for $100-$240 and Hereford-Friesian, $160-$350. Heifers of same breeding made $100-$220, and Angus-cross, $180.

Mixed age ewes made $98-$106, and mixed sex lambs, $56-$117.
