Rongotea sale 11.10

Another good yarding of 2-year cattle sold well at Rongotea on Wednesday, in spite of the continuous rain in Manawatu, New Zealand Farmers Livestock agent Darryl Harwood reported.

Hereford bulls, 605kg, sold as service bulls for $3.88/kg, while Friesian, 460kg, managed $2.76/kg. Good quality Hereford-Friesian heifers proved popular and sold as high as $3.26/kg, while lesser types, and crossbred returned $2.64-$2.65/kg. Friesian, 340kg, made $2.41/kg.

While few 2-year steers could be found, they featured prominently through the 15-month pens, though prices reflected limited demand and mixed quality. Hereford-Friesian, 290-317kg, made $2.04-$2.65/kg, and Friesian, 310kg, $2.29/kg. Prices were similar in the heifer pens, where Hereford-Friesian, 270-397kg, returned $2.03-$2.65/kg, and Friesian, 335-370kg, $2.31-$2.40/kg.

Highlights in the 1-year pens was a line of Hereford-Friesian steers, 277kg, which made $900, $3.24/kg, and Friesian, 247kg, $840, $3.40/kg, though most other lines sold well below $3.00/kg. Jersey bulls, 208-266kg, made adequate values at $2.30-$2.64/kg, while the best of the heifers were Angus-cross, 302kg, $2.89/kg. The remainder of the heifer section was mixed quality, with most trading at $2.32-$2.68/kg.

Autumn-born heifers sold to keen interest, and Hereford-Friesian, 202kg, achieved $705, while Friesian, 117kg, made $400. Weaner Friesian bulls, 185kg, sold for $560, while crossbred, 128-170kg, returned $330-$460. The best of the Friesian bull calves fetched $290, with smaller types making $40-$60. Hereford-Friesian earned $90-$180, and Charolais-cross, $255. Heifers sold for $40-$190.

In the dairy section, in-calf Friesian cows made $1090, and Jersey, $660-$900, while in-milk Friesian heifers returned $1180. Boner prices were steady, with most trading at $1.51-$1.69/kg.

The small pens consisted of ewes with lambs-at-foot a $78 all counted, and mixed sex lambs, $91-$123.
