Pukekohe sale 8.9

Weaner prices were exceptionally strong at Pukekohe on Saturday, though the entire small sale had a firm tone to it, Livestock Mart Auctions Limited’s Pat Farrell reported.

A large audience gathered despite the cold, wet conditions, and forward 2-year steers, 486-487kg, sold for an impressive $2.90-$3.08/kg, while prime heifers, 449-612kg, returned $2.87-$2.94/kg. Store heifers, 423-430kg varied from $2.69/kg to $2.82/kg, and lighter crossbred steers, 374kg, $2.99/kg.

Quality was down in the 1-year pens but prices headed the other way, with small crossbred steers, 237-273kg, earning $740-$890, and heifers, 236-250kg, $680-$910. Weaner prices were staggering, as 100-109kg steers went under the hammer for $570-$685, with heifers not far behind at $560-$610 for 104-105kg.

A small offering of cows saw a line of 886kg hit $2.38/kg, while 479kg traded at $1.99/kg. Light cows, 429-488kg, realised $1.64-$1.77/kg.
