Kaikohe sale 10.01

Avatar photo
Kaikohe started off the year with a small ewe fair, followed by an equally small cattle sale as the well-publicized rain through Northland meant farmers could have another week holiday.

The ewe fair consisted of 700 head, with the market up around $15-$20 on last year. Romney-Texel two-tooth’s sold for $120-$145, while mixed age returned $125-$127, and 5-year $100-$120. A tidy consignment of Romney-Texel wethers and mixed sex lambs had a keen following, selling for $90-$100.
Moving into the cattle pens and the 180 cattle sold freely. While the low numbers meant market indicators could not be obtained the bigger lines on the day included 2-year Friesian steers at $2.60/kg, and 15-month beef-cross heifers, $2.70-$2.75/kg. One-year Simmental bulls made $2.70-$2.80/kg. Weaner Friesian steers, 160kg, fetched $602, with 100kg Angus and Angus-cross bulls making similar value at $605.
Friesian-cross cows returned $1.65/kg.
