Canterbury Park sale 06.11

The cattle section of the Canterbury Park sale on Tuesday featured cattle that were part of the New Zealand Agriculture Show. This annual competition is hotly contested by dedicated competitors, and the mainly exotic and traditional cattle entered were worth all of their competition status.

The Allflex Supreme Campion Exhibit award went to John McDrury, a seasoned competitor, for his Limousin heifer (bred by the James Family, Whitecliffs), which also won the Best Single Heifer. In the Best Single Steer section McDrury took first, second and third spots with Charolais and Limousin. He also won best pairs of both steers and heifers, again with Charolais and Limousin.  The Best Local Trade Steer or Heifer was won by an Angus steer, owned by David Carter, Teddington, while Best Local Trade Pair went to Glyn Morris, Irwell, with two Speckle Park. The heavyweight steer competition was not held this year. The winning exotic steers in the prime section of the competition sold for $3.10-$3.17/kg, while award-winning heifers traded at $2.90-$3.10/kg.

In the regular sale section traditional prime steers and heifers firmed to $2.80-$2.90/kg for heavy types, while Hereford-cross steers, 470kg through to 815kg, largely sold for $2.75-$2.84/kg. Prices for Hereford-Friesian steers were firm at $2.70-$2.80/kg.

Heifers had a good day as those that would yield well firmed 5-8c/kg and beef-cross, 525-575kg, averaged $2.74/kg, while Hereford-Friesian, 450-550kg, returned $2.70-$2.80/kg.

Sheep took a back seat to the cattle as tallies fell below 1000 head. Three small pens of new season store lambs sold for $77-$111, while just over 260 prime lambs largely traded at $120-$175. The top lines reached $186-$199.

The biggest section was the prime hoggets, though these still only managed 346 head. Prices were steady to easing and the lion's share sold for $140-$187, with top lines up to $199. Two lines of hoggets with mainly single lambs-at-foot sold well at $103-$114 all counted.
