The summer safe climate to the east of the Ruahine Ranges in Central Hawke’s Bay is home to a 134-hectare deer farm, Puketotara, that achieves high returns from its velveting stags and breeding hinds.

For sale by negotiation, the farm is located at Wakarara near the village of Ongaonga and 29km west of Waipukurau which puts it in a rainbelt and one of the better farming areas of Central Hawke's Bay. The location ensures mild winters and relatively moist summers.

Andy Hunter from Bayleys said it was a high-performance deer unit and an aesthetically appealing farm due to a QEII covenant as well as totara and kanuka trees scattered over the landscape.

“It's a really attractive farm and the trees are good shelter for the deer,” he says. “It’s predominantly easy-to-medium rolling hill country with strong Makaretu and Matamau silt loam soils and has been a good little deer unit, but also has a range of options.”

Wakarara is regarded as one of the most productive areas Central Hawke’s Bay and the farm is surrounded by high-producing dairy farms and extensive bull beef operations.

About 70ha of the farm is suitable contour for cultivation and brassica crops have been regularly grown as well as hay or silage made. About 20ha is indigenous forest and 4.5ha is newly planted in pinus radiata, with the remaining pasture on the farm in good heart and few weeds.

A good tracking network throughout the farm enables quad bikes to get around in winter, with good all-weather access to the woolshed and deer shed complex.

Water to the 24 paddocks is supplied via natural streams and permanent dams which are kept well supplied by the regular rainfall.

An attractive older three-bedroom home has been extensively refurbished to a high level and opens to a sheltered deck in extensive gardens.

“It’s only minutes to the Ongaonga village and handy to State Highway 50, so it’s a handy location.”
