LETTER: NAIT response causes incredulity

In the article entitled Cattle microchip views differ, Annette Scott, Farmers Weekly, October 10, I am incredulous to read the comment “An OSPRI spokesman said NAIT staff only managed the programme so were not responsible for what it could or couldn’t do”.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

I understand these people are essentially call centre staff but who is responsible to fine tune a system that is obviously failing to work and becoming more difficult to be compliant with?

Possibly it is okay to work within NAIT if you have a small block but on a larger working farm with hundreds or thousands of animals it will be, as far as I can see, impossible to have 100% animals and movements registered.

One of our key problems is RFID tags breaking and falling out of cattle ears.

Obviously, then you cannot dial into the system and replace the old tag with the new.

You don’t have the old tag on hand.

Tagging the animals is simple, it is the database work, involving many hours that makes the whole process difficult and unproductive.

Discussing microchips raises the question how to marry the information of a new set of data to the other information on NAIT.

Please, just don’t go there, it will tip us over the edge.
