Deer farming in Trotters Gorge

Alderbank Deer Farm, a 210-hectare property in Trotters Gorge, eastern Otago is for sale by deadline treaty.
Reading Time: < 1 minute

Situated 35km south of Oamaru and 65km north of Dunedin, the farm is completely deer fenced to a high standard. Astute planning by the vendor for the efficient flow and handling of deer is a feature but also offers the opportunity to farm cattle as well, Southern Wide Real Estate agent Barry Meikle said.

The property appealed as being in very good heart tidy and largely clear of any thistles or gorse, he said. The water scheme, pumped from the Trotters Gorge stream was reliable and had a potential capacity of 62,000 litres a day.

Improvements include a large eight-bay lean-to shed with workshop and enclosed staff amenities.

The large deer shed was of the highest quality, Meikle said, and featured multiple pens and races, Heenan hydraulic handler, three-way drafting and weighing system and pressurised wash down hose. Cattle yards and long handling race are adjacent to the sheds.

The farm offered the complete package for deer farming, but was also very suitable for the farming cattle or sheep.

The older three-bedroom home required renovation.
