Synlait Milk has brought in round the clock physical security checks for site access, including photo identification for all staff at its plant in central Canterbury.

Synlait and Westland Milk Products put out statements emphasising food safety as the highest priority for them and confirming their product security measures.

Open Country Dairy chairman Laurie Margrain made the same point to FW, saying the group was supremely confident of its systems and site security.

“Public safety is number one for us and it is business as usual.”

Synlait Milk had full end-to-end supply chain control from farm to containers for all of its milk powder and infant formula products, managing director John Penno said.

Raw milk was quality tested and there was also comprehensive testing of finished product before it was loaded into shipping containers for export.

Westland Milk chief executive Rod Quin said it was important to note the 1080 threat had not arisen as a result of any deficiency of NZ’s world class, food quality system but was a criminal threat and was being treated as such.

“We are very confident in our product security while within our manufacturing and distribution systems.”

There was no evidence the safety of any products had been compromised.
