Support needed in growing emerging protein market A report from FoodHQ is calling for more collaboration to ensure we capitalise on the growing market for emerging proteins.

It’s an industry that’s going great guns overseas and more and more alternative proteins are finding their way onto supermarket shelves here too.

There’s been a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to these products by some in the primary industries in recent years, perhaps from people fearful they’ll take the place of the animal proteins that dominate New Zealand farming systems.

But there’s room for everything on the shelf and farmers would be remiss not to investigate whether producing these new proteins is right for them.

The report says we’re already falling behind many other nations in terms of investment, coordination and production of emerging proteins.

So if farmers are going to commit, there needs to be a comprehensive and maturing industry here for them to be a part of.
