A sizeable percentage of New Zealand food producers will be cheered by foodie Lauraine Jacobs’ thoughts on what foods are right and wrong for children.

In an interview promoting the concept of a Ministry of Food, the Cordon Bleu-trained writer says she is horrified to see guidelines around children’s nutrition discouraging dairy and red meat in diets.

“That really is tantamount to treason,” she opines. 

Jacobs believes the time is ripe for a Ministry that would not only offer guidance over nutrition but also make life easier for producers by cutting across the myriad agencies they have to deal with in favour of a one-stop central agency.

And while Jacinda Ardern is riding high in public esteem, who better to head the Ministry, she asks.

 

Councils gear up for green work

Two regional councils have welcomed the Budget’s pledge to spend up large on green projects, saying the $1.1b move will benefit their regions as well as provide much needed jobs.

Lauraine Jacobs, a long time food campaigner supporting Kiwi produce, has called for the creation of a Ministry of Food to highlight the high quality of local products. She describes as “treason” the calls to put children off eating dairy and red meat.
