Despite its reputation as a world-class centre for important research, especially into sheep genetics and genomics, it was to be disbanded and scientists shifted to Lincoln or Palmerston North.

Last year the Invermay campus was finally granted the reprieve its supporters sought but not before more than 40 staff had resigned.

Meanwhile, Bidrose has been appointed chief executive of AgResearch, a decision that will please staff who appreciated her role in helping to keep the campus in its rightful place on the Taieri Plains.

Non-shareholding farmers join Fonterra

Fonterra’s MyMilk scheme has started in the North Island with 30 farms signed up to add to the 132 South Island farms already involved. The scheme lets farmers supply Fonterra without being fully paid-up shareholders.

 

Allied Farmers expands

Allied Farmers is expanding its finance arm and hopes to set up a research and development programme to invest in innovation as well as expanding its website with a focus on agri-tech.

West Coast agricultural showcase AgFest-West is hoping to attract crowds from across the Main Divide in November, capitalising on the cancellation of Canterbury’s A&P Show.

 

Campaigner to chief executive

Sue Bidrose was a vocal supporter of the campaign to retain AgResearch’s Invermay campus in the south and save scores of jobs as well as its important sheep genetics facility. She has now been appointed the Crown research institute’s chief executive.

 

Log exports lift

Primary sector exports including logs are in solid demand overseas. Log receipts rebounded by $200 million in May. Stats NZ’s annual trade deficit figures show motor vehicle imports dropped markedly during the lockdown.

7.30pm – Farmers in many regions are experiencing feed shortages and are being encouraged to plan for their stock needs. Central Hawke’s Bay lifestyler Kate Luff encourages more people to use the free feeding planning tools for farms of all sizes.

7.40pm – The high country could be the last bastion for a good keen bloke in New Zealand’s increasingly diverse farm employment tapestry. Nuffield Scholar Hamish Murray will share his research on the changing nature of farm work.
