The new generation of farm workers differs from their taciturn elders – at least that’s the finding of Nuffield scholar and Clarence Valley high-country farmer Hamish Murray who has been studying the problem of attracting and retaining good staff.

The distinction appears to be around education and the fact in the computer age people have got used to the experience of and expect constant feedback. 

For an exemplar he went to Canterbury’s Crusaders to see how their success came on the back of clear goals and a vision and getting players to buy into that.

It turns out today’s young farm workers are still good keen blokes and blokettes – they just like to be reminded of it.

Greener genetics on show 

This year genetics company LIC is providing information on a bull’s ability to produce cattle with a lower nitrogen and methane footprint as well as the usual production and economic traits.

 

Lamb marketer traverses choppy waters

The Lamb Company, which services the North American market, forecasts it will finish the financial year 13% down compared to last year. Supermarket sales have filled some of the void created by the collapse of the restaurant trade.

Nuffield Scholar Hamish Murray has been thinking about the importance of attracting and retaining good staff who expect frequent feedback, communication and input from farm bosses.

 

Firearms rules lift costs

A small group of farmers will be able to use prohibited firearms for pest control but there is no guarantee they can get new rifles or parts. If they apply to import them, the paperwork alone will cost over US$500 and it could take six months to get their hands on them.

 

Need for new food focus

An Auckland-based think tank says food producers need to focus on growing consumer demand for high-quality food and where it comes from as well as nutritional value, animal welfare, carbon footprint and environmental protection.
