Keeping our motor running  Fuel. We all need it. The food we eat fuels our day, petrol or electricity fuels our cars and fossil fuels power our industry.

Increasingly, food producers are looking to move away from creating carbon dioxide as much as possible, but it’s not easy.

Big food producers like Fonterra have coal powered factories that will require major rebuilds to run on cleaner fuel.

It’s chosen wood for its South Island plants despite there being surplus electricity in the offing with the closure of Tiwai Point.

Fonterra’s goal is a 30% reduction in emissions from processing by 2030. That isn’t much time to carry out major engineering works at its many sites. But it’s moving in the right direction and positioning itself to help fuel our economy into a more sustainable future.
