Bought in 1946, Winchmore has been central in initial research into the use of border dyke irrigation and fertiliser dating back to the early 1950s, contributing to more than 500 science publications.

“Projects and priorities have changed in recent years, which has seen more research conducted on commercial farms or small-scale intensive research,” AgResearch infrastructure director John O’Dea said.

“This means the Winchmore site has primarily focused on the long-term fertiliser trials.”

A 35-year lease signed by the Fertiliser Association will ensure a 4.1ha fertiliser trial, which started in the 1950s, will continue.

The property will be offered in two parts.

O’Dea said a combination of Lismore soils and spray irrigation, installed in 2017, will support a range of cropping and grazing options.

This year potatoes, wheat, barley, maize, peas and specialist seeds were grown at Winchmore, with a small area of lucerne and permanent pasture.

The farm will be offered for sale by deadline private treaty, with offers to be received by the end of February.

“The sale of Winchmore will enable AgResearch to invest in its wider research facilities and thus continue driving prosperity by transforming agriculture,” O’Dea said.
