Following a strong start to the year dairy export volumes dropped away in June.  New Zealand dairy exports typically are at their seasonal low during the winter months, but the drought earlier in the year means product availablility is even tighter this season. Whole milk powder exports during the first half of 2013 were 3% higher than during H2 2012.  But just a month ago the year-to-date export volumes were up 12% (January-May).

While New Zealand has managed to export more WMP this year, other countries did not.  The combined total exports from the five main dairy exporters, New Zealand, Australia, the United States, the European Union (EU), and Argentina, came in 1% short across the first five months of 2013.  During this time WMP exports from the EU were 32% down year-on-year, which was equalled in percentage terms by Argentina.  Australia have also dropped the volume of WMP exported, recording a 22% drop in volumes.

Whole milk powder is the most globally traded dairy product, when you exclude trade within the EU, followed by cheese and then skim milk powder.  During the first 5 months of this year the Big 5 exported more than 830,000 tonnes of WMP of which 70% was supplied by New Zealand supplied.
