There are 18 local authorities as well as processing companies using its aerator.

Vertec designs, makes and installs the aerators and refurbishes existing units.

Now the Little Stirrer range, specifically designed for farm oxidation ponds to comply with the Resource Management Act, is available direct to farmers. The use of cage rotor aerators was rapidly gaining wide acceptance as an efficient and economical method of treating effluent discharged into ponds, managing director Jason Whitley said.

“These aerators have an almost silent operation to give speedy assistance to a naturally occurring biological process.”

Independent tests showed the aerators had a clearly superior oxygen transfer rate and greater mixing ability than aspirator type aerators.

To work effectively, farm oxidation ponds needed an efficient aerator to inject oxygen into the pond because oxygen fed the bacteria that breaks down the effluent.

To work properly an aerator must stir up the water to put oxygen in, run for lengthy periods without maintenance, cost very little to use and work quietly.

The Little Stirrer was the only aerator to achieve all those objectives, Whitley said.

For an oxidation pond to work the top third of the effluent must be stirred and aerobic. The Vertec Little Stirrer’s unique blades operated at the optimum depth for effective aeration but did not interfere with the sludge at the bottom of the pond.

Little Stirrer’s constant stirring action kept the pond active and brought bacteria and oxygen into contact with effluent to ensure no smell, no midges, no unhappy neighbours and a nutrient-rich product ready for transfer direct to pastures.
