The Rangiora-based firm has been supplying the Smart Silos throughout the country for about eight years after farmers asked for longer-lasting and hygienic storage solutions.

“Smart Silos have unique advantages such as low maintenance, if any, increased insulation which decreases condensation inside the silo and quick and easy assembly,” David Hickmott of Advantage Plastics says.

“They are very, very popular especially because their shape allows unrivalled flow. And in coastal conditions, of course, they don’t rust so in Southland they are in demand as they are right throughout the country.”

The rotationally-moulded plastic silos are made from linear, medium density polyethylene (LMDPE) which is a compound-based resin. They are UV resistant and stabilised so stand up to New Zealand’s weather. LMDPE also carries a health grade rating and so is environment friendly as well as strong and long-lasting.

Sizes range from half tonne capacities to 30 tonnes and feature spring lids, sight glasses, certified galvanised frames and a double angle cone for smooth flowing. Ladders and auger attachments are also available.

Hickmott said customised framing could be designed and built in Advantage Plastics’ factory to farmers’ dimensions to accommodate different machinery and systems.

“They’ve really opened farmers’ eyes,” Hickmott says.

“Smart Silos are real value for money.”
