US produces more cheese, butter behind year-ago levels

Production volumes of US dairy products during the month of September showed mixed movements compared to year-ago and month-ago volumes. Cumulative volumes of cheese produced are ahead of a year earlier. Cumulative butter volumes are behind but the gap is narrowing.

Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 956 million pounds. This was 2.4% above September 2014 but 2.3% below August 2015.  Italian type cheese production totalled 403 million pounds, 0.4% above September 2014 but 1.6% below August 2015. American type cheese production totalled 376 million pounds, 2.8% above September 2014 but 3.8% below August 2015. 

Cumulative volumes of total cheese for the 2015 year to September sits at 2.5% above the same period in 2014, at 8710 million pounds.

Butter production for September was 134 million pounds, 0.9% above September 2014 and 4.3% above August 2015. 

Monthly butter production during 2015 has been down for 6 of the 9 months to September compared to a year earlier. Cumulative volumes to September are 1.4% behind the same period a year earlier at 1372 million pounds, which is the narrowest gap for the year. 

Nonfat dry milk production for September totalled 121 million pounds, up 7.3% from a year earlier but down 3% from a month earlier. Cumulative volumes to September stand at 1423 million pounds, up 8.3% from the same period a year earlier. The growth in volumes over the previous year has been trimmed back in the third quarter compared to the second quarter where growth was above 11%.

The lower volume of skimmed milk powders produced in September reached 26.8 million pounds, down 34.4% on a year earlier and down 31.7% volumes produced in August 2015. Cumulative volumes to September came to 320 million pounds, down 24.8% on a year earlier.
