US milk production up 1.9% – June 2014

Milk production in the US expanded by 1.9% in June 2014, totaling 7.8 million tonnes. The dairy herd size is estimated to have grown this month, while milk per cow is lower than last month.

Milk production for the first half of the year has grown by 1.3%. The USDA currently forecasts 2.3% growth in milk production across the full calendar year. 

Cow numbers have continued growing this month, up to 9.27 million head. The number of cows have expanded every month since November last year. Since January, cow numbers have increased by 56,000 head.

Milk per cow decreased in June to 845 kg from 886kg last month, following the typical seasonal production curve. For the first six months this year, milk per cow has averaged 850kg.
