UK slaughter numbers drop slightly

AHDB Dairy says Defra statistics show UK slaughter numbers in the first six months of 2015 have decreased by 1% to about 640,000 head compared to the same time last year.

It said this could suggest that dairy farmers have not yet started to respond to margin pressures by slaughtering more animals.

However, as the winter approaches and dairy producers start to house cows, slaughter numbers may start to rise above last year’s levels, AHDB Dairy said.
