UK butter production down, cheese production up

Defra has released provisional production data for UK dairy products. Provisional production data from Defra shows 617,000 tonnes of liquid milk was produced in the UK during May 2015, 1.1% less than a year earlier or down about 7000t.

Liquid milk production for the 12 months to May 2015 was 7.155 million tonnes. This was 61,000 tonnes higher than the same period in 2014.

Butter production was down by 2000t or 13.2% in May 2015 compared with the previous year at 12,000t. Production of butter for the 12 months ending May 2015 was down by 14.8% compared with the same period the previous year.

Cheese production was at 39,000t for May 2015, down by 400t from a year earlier. Cheese production was up 1.5% for the 12 months to May 2015 reached 403,000t compared to the same period a year earlier.
