A top West Coast dairy herd on free-draining river silts has everything in place to make it an ideal turnkey operation and is for sale at $3.3 million, including shares.

A spectacular backdrop of the Southern Alps sets the scene for the 149ha farm at Whataroa that produced 128,000kg milksolids (MS) from 260 cows last season, with calves fed out of the vat and all the cows wintered on the milking platform.

Shari McLaughlin from Farmlands Real Estate said it was the perfect turnkey operation because it was so well set up and tidy.

"It's a spectacularly tidy property and has consistent production. It's owned by people who moved down from the North Island and they have got it really pumping."

About 145ha of the farm is effective and spreads over flat contour in a climate that receives 3.5m of rain a year. About 200 tonnes of silage is made on the farm in a mix of pit and bales, while 10ha of winter crop includes swedes and kale. As well as supplements made on the farm, 120t of meal is bought in for the season, as well as straw for drying the cows off and wintering.

The Friesian herd which calves from August 1 is also for sale and has a BW of 90 and PW 108. The cows averaged close to 500kg MS in the past three seasons and young stock won the South Westland Heifer Competition for the past two years.

Adding to the package is a tidy 26-aside herringbone dairy with near-new plant and a meal feeding system. Numerous farm buildings cater for everything possible and the calf shed is "way and beyond what most people have".

The homestead has three bedrooms and a sleepout, while a second home also has three bedrooms.

"It's a very tidy and well-appointed property with just enough scale to employ labour but not too big to break the budget."

Whataroa is a small township with basic amenities and a primary school, while Harihari 20 minutes away, has an area school, and Hokitika is an hour-and-a-half north.
