System streamlined

Tenure review has been the catalyst for cattle change at Gem Lake Station. Completion of the 15-year process in 2013, ending in the dispersal of a run block used for the grazing of breeding cows over summer to early winter, has required a cattle management rethink by owner Steve Norman and farm manager Stu Moore. In short their goal is to streamline the system and get the same kilograms of meat on the back of young cattle six months earlier.

Stu Moore and this year’s Cavalcade mount Bonus.

Horsing around takes up most of Stu Moore’s after-hours time.

He has been around horses since knee-high and now takes part in rodeo team roping, hunting and the Otago Goldfields Cavalcade. Stu has been part of all 23 cavalcades, cutting his teeth on his first at 15 with his father.

He prefers the lengthy five day-plus rides and was a trail boss for seven years, the loose job description of which is to plan in detail the trail and take charge during the multi-day rides in remote and basic conditions.

He has ridden a different horse
each year, usually a young one requiring a few miles under the saddle. This year’s mount was Bonus, a five-year-old barrel racer with excess energy and a bit of an attitude.
