An estimated total of 17.428 billion pounds of milk was collected in the US in April 2014, 1% more than the same time in 2013. In the 23 main milk producing states a growth rate of 1.2% was recorded.
The number of cows in milk expanded by 10,000 head to 9.231 million head. But this was partially offset by a reduction in cow productivity.

Growth in milk production in California was 1.5% during April, while Idaho recorded growth of 1.1%. The cold weather experienced in the midwest during the winter and early spring appears to have kept production in Wisconsin in check. Production there was down by 0.3% compared to the previous April.
Data for March was revised upwards in terms of total milk production (+0.1%), and cow numbers were revised up by a further 3,000 head.
