Small increase in US milk production

Avatar photo
MIlk production in the United States increased by 1% during September, relative to the same month last year.  This increase was the smallest monthly increase recorded since May and was generally lower than expected. The number of dairy cows in milk was slightly higher than the same month in 2012.  Numbers increased by 12,000 head to 9.207 million.  Per cow productivity also improved slightly relative to September 2012.  This is not surprising given that many cows were negatively impacted by excessive heat during the drought which occurred in the US this time last year. The rate of growth in milk production slowed in many of the main milk producing states during the month of September.  California appeared to be improving during August where output grew by 2.7% but this rate of growth was curbed back to 0.4% during September.  Wisonsin growth rate fell back to 1% following a period of sustained higher growth.  In Idaho production continues to fall relative to last season, with output down -1.5% in September a further fall from the -0.7% fall recorded in August.   Click here to download the full report
