Slow start for Australia’s dairy season

Avatar photo
Milk output during the first month of Australia’s new dairy season was not particularly spectacular.  Milk production was down 3.5% in July 2013 compared with the same month in 2012.  Australia’s dairy production season officially starts a month later than the New Zealand season.  During July production was down in four of the six states of Australia.  Tasmania and Western Australia were the only states to show growth with milk production, up 3.8% and 0.8% respectively.  Production was down in New South Wales (-5.3%), Queensland (-3%) and South Australia (-9.4%), while output in Victoria was -3.3% behind last season. Victoria is the largest milk producing state in Australia, accounting for about two thirds of all of Australia’s milk production.  Victoria is also the state responsible for most of the dairy product exported from Australia.  Within Victoria production in the Western region was constrained the most, being down by -8.6% on the previous July.  Output was also subdued in Eastern Victoria, known as Gippsland (-2%), while growth is still being achieved in the Northern part of Victoria (+3.6%).
