Cheese production
Total cheese production for November 2015 totalled 976m pounds, up 0.6% on November 2014 but down 2.2% on October 2015.
The two main categories of cheese, Italian and American, however, were both down in volume compared to a year ago.
Italian type cheese production accounted for 422m pounds of total cheese. This figure is 0.5% below November 2014 but 0.4% above October 2015.
American type cheese production accounted for 377m pounds of total cheese for the month of November. This figure is 0.3% below November 2014 and 3.6% below October 2015.
For the year to the end of November 2015 total cumulative cheese production is 2.3% ahead of the same period a year earlier or by 241m pounds.
For this same period, American type cheese is ahead 2.5% or 103m pounds. Total Italian type cheese is ahead 1.8% or 83m pounds, and of this Mozzarella is up 0.7% (25m pounds).
Butter production
Butter production for November 2015 totalled 151m pounds, up 4.4% from November 2014 and 2.2% ahead of October 2015.
The increase of 4.4% is the biggest gain butter production has seen all year.
For the year to the end of November 2015 butter production is down 0.9% on the same period a year earlier or by 15m pounds.
Nonfat dry milk production
Nonfat dry milk production for November was down 16.9% on a year earlier to 126m pounds and up 6.7% on October 2015.
For the year to the end of November 2015 cumulative production for nonfat dry milk (human) was up 4.1% on the same period a year earlier or by 66m pounds.
Manufacturers’ stocks held at the end of November were 200m pounds, 8.4% below a year ago but 11.3% ahead of a month earlier.
Manufacturers’ shipments totalled 105m pounds, according to USDA’s report, down 12.5% on a year ago and down 27.1% on a month earlier.
