Round-up: EU dairy prices fall for key products

Internal prices for all key dairy products in the European Union fell for the week ending November 29 with the exception of Gouda and whey powder, the weekly price report from the Milk Market Observatory says. Cheddar received the biggest hit with a fall of 5.3% to €287/100kg. Butter fell 2% to €298/100kg, whole milk powder fell 1.9% to €224/100kg and skimmed milk powder fell 1.2% to €172/100kg.

While Gouda gained 0.4% for the week to quote €253/100kg, Emmental dropped by 1.8% to €379/100kg and edam eased slightly by 0.2% to €252/100kg, Whey powder prices remained stable.

While butter is clearly ahead of the intervention price of €221.75/100kg, some countries are experiencing prices for SMP below the intervention price of €169.8/100kg including the Netherlands and Germany.

Skimmed milk powder private storage

Data on public intervention and private storage show skimmed milk powder being offered into private storage has slowed from the previous week. Of the 941t entering storage, Belgium entered 321t, Czech Republic 88t, France 244t, and the Netherlands 288t.

A total of 520t utilised the storage scheme with a storage period of 365 days. 421t was put into storage for less than 210 days.

For the month of September 5720t of SMP enter the PSA scheme and 3537t left the scheme.

Skimmed milk powder public intervention

SMP placed into public intervention was about the same as the previous week and the same countries as the previous week entered product into the scheme. 

A total 1807t was entered with Belgium being the biggest contributor offering 1018t. Lithuania entered 549t and Poland entered 240t.

Butter private storage

Butter volumes entered into the intervention scheme were also similar to a week earlier. A total of 770t was entered for the week. The Netherlands offered 435t, Belgium offered 211t and UK offered 124t.

For the month of September 8702t of butter entered the PSA scheme and 19,542t left the scheme.

Cheese private storage

Lithuania was the only country to utilise the cheese private storage scheme with 408t being entered. Although France did offer a small amount of 5t.
