It was very windy at Rangiuru last Tuesday with the cattle pens full of a colourful mix of breeds. Quality remained variable, with one line of Hereford, 312kg, the best-selling heifers at $3.22/kg. Hereford-Friesian, 375-490kg, sold for $3.05/kg to $3.18/kg.
Over half of the store yarding were yearlings where Hereford-Friesian steers softened as 183-235kg were mostly $3.62-$3.72/kg. Most yearling bulls were Friesian in the 325-355kg range and averaged $2.77/kg. The first of the spring weaners appeared, with 130kg Hereford-Friesian heifers at $540. The highlight in the prime section was a single pen of 30 Angus steers, 620kg, that realised $3.27/kg. All other steers tipped the scales over 500kgs and made $3.15-$3.26/kg regardless of breed.
