Exports of milk powder from NZ reached record levels in December 2014.

Statistics New Zealand data shows that in December milk powder exports from NZ exceeded 250,000 tonnes. 191,759 tonnes of whole milk powder (WMP) and 60,292 tonnes of skim milk powder (SMP) was shipping out of NZ in the final month of 2015. This is the most milk powder that has ever been shipped from NZ in a single month.

December exports are often higher that other months as the peak in NZ's milk supply typically occurs at about the end of October. It then takes approximately a month or longer to manufacture raw milk into milk powder, package, transport it to the wharf and load it onto a ship. Therefore peak exports of dairy products typically occur in December.

Across the full 2014 calendar year NZ exported 383,005 tones of SMP and 1,423,834 tonnes of WMP. China accounted for 41% of all of the WMP exported from NZ last year while the next largest market was the United Arab Emirates (UAE) who accounted for nearly 8%. Algeria grew their market share considerable to account for 6.7% of exports, well ahead of Malaysia (4.2%) and Sri Lanka (3.3%). Saudi Arabia and Nigeria are also large and growing markets for NZ WMP. The majority of the remainder of the major markets are located in South East Asia and include: Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, Bangladesh and the Philippines. Venezuela, once NZ's largest WMP market dropped down the ranks to No.16. In 2014 only 17,368 tonnes of NZ WMP was exported to Venezuela.

2014 was a record export year for WMP in terms of both volume and value. NZ$7.2 billion worth of WMP was exported last year. Prices were down slightly on the previous year but still very high with WMP exports being worth an average of NZ$5,125/tonne according to Statistics New Zealand data. But the slight fall in unit value was more than offset by the 8.6% increase in the total volume exported.

While WMP exports reached record levels in 2014 SMP exports did not. SMP returned NZ$1.9 billion worth of export earnings but this was slightly down on the previous year. SMP exports from NZ peaked at over 400,000 tonnes in 2009. Since this time export volumes have eased back a little and have been very stable in volume terms over the past 3 years. However the total size of the globally traded SMP market is growing indicating that NZ is losing market share to its competitors from the US and Europe.
