However, when taken on a volume basis, New Zealand exports of dairy commodities have grown by 5%* compared to August 2014. Whole milk powder (WMP) and butter had the most noticeable improvements of 19% and 23% respectively. Skim milk powder (SMP) and cheese fell when compared on the same basis, by 13% and 3% respectively. Whey fell considerably (-46% from August 2014), however whey is not a significant dairy export product for New Zealand.
Most of New Zealand’s August exports went to China (132,080 tonnes) followed by Malaysia, Japan and Algeria. Most of China’s imports were milk powders.
